In 2020 and 2021, Standard General Edmonton was awarded two separate contracts for the greater Ray Gibbon Drive Twinning Project, a high-priority transportation initiative for the City of St. Albert. All projects in this initiative are aimed at roadway twinning to improve transportation efficiency and reduce traffic congestion. The full program includes four phases of transportation network improvements, currently scheduled for completion by 2028.
Standard General Edmonton completed Phase 1 of the multi-stage expansion in 2020. This phase included the widening of Ray Gibbon Drive from 137 Avenue to approximately 600 meters north of the LeClair Way intersection. This expansion added extra lanes to accommodate the increasing number of daily commuters, effectively twinning 1.5 kilometers of Ray Gibbon Drive. Pedestrian and cyclist pathways were also included, making the corridor safer and more accessible for non-motorized travel. Additional improvements included new street lighting, upgrades at key intersections and landscaping work.
Phase 2A of the project was awarded to Standard General Edmonton and was completed in 2021. Like Phase 1, the goal was to continue the twinning of Ray Gibbon Drive. This phase focused on widening and improving Ray Gibbon Drive from north of LeClair Way to north of McKenney Drive. Phase 2 has supported increasing traffic volumes, improved safety, and enhanced regional connectivity, while also incorporating intersection upgrades and the construction of dedicated pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure. Modern LED Street lighting was installed to improve nighttime visibility, and drainage and stormwater management systems were enhanced to support long-term roadway durability.
As the general contractor on site, Standard General Edmonton managed several subcontractors responsible for various aspects of the work while collaborating directly with the City of St. Albert and various utility providers. As a result of these two contracts, we have successfully contributed to the twinning of Ray Gibbon Drive and have further expanded our portfolio of successful infrastructure projects in St. Albert.
