The Valley Line West LRT is one of the largest infrastructure projects currently under construction in Edmonton. The project represents a $2.6 – $2.7 billion transit expansion that will extend Edmonton’s light rail network 14 kilometres west from downtown to Lewis Farms. Once complete, the line will form the western half of the Valley Line, which ultimately connects Mill Woods in southeast Edmonton to Lewis Farms in the west, creating a continuous LRT corridor across the city.
The project includes 16 new stations, elevated structures, bridges, track infrastructure, utility relocations, and major roadway reconstruction along the alignment. Unlike traditional grade-separated LRT systems, the Valley Line West is designed primarily as a street-level urban LRT, integrated directly into existing roadways and communities. As a result, a substantial portion of the work involves reconstruction of the surface transportation network along the corridor.
The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership by Marigold Infrastructure Partners, the consortium selected by the City of Edmonton to design, build, and partially finance the project. Marigold is led by Colas Infrastructure Canada, in partnership with Parsons, and is supported by a number of engineering, construction, and specialty contractors responsible for various components of the work.
Surface civil works represent a significant portion of the overall construction scope, which includes roadway reconstruction, curb and sidewalk installation, intersection modifications, paving, utility coordination, and restoration work required to integrate the LRT system within the existing transportation corridor. Standard General Edmonton is responsible for delivering a substantial portion of the project’s surface works and will play a key role in delivering the surface infrastructure that will support the long-term operation of the Valley Line West LRT.
